It Doesn’t Get Any Better!

Another great week with the brothers( and nephews). This time in the back woods of Ontario, Canada!

Every other year we get together somewhere and this year we traveled to Ear Falls, Ontario and the Evergreen Lodge on Lac Seul for a week of camaraderie, catching up, some good food and drinks and maybe time to fish. Actually as we are getting older the mornings get later, the drinking and card games gets less and bedtime comes earlier, but we were still were on the lake for almost 10 hours each day! a lot of that is thanks to how great the fishing is on this lake.

Lac Seul is a product of the English river dam at Ear Falls. It’s a huge lake almost 150 miles long and 138 feet at the deepest. It’s home to the largest walleye population in Ontario and also has a significant population of northern pike, plus muskie, small mouth bass and a we even caught a few yellow perch. You can find more out about it here.

We stayed at the Evergreen Lodge up in the north-west corner of the lake close to the dam. The lodge is owned and operated by a young couple and their young son who have owed the resort since 2019. They are both from the area of Ear Falls and have vast knowledge of the lake and surrounding. Brent being a local outdoorsman his whole life was able to give us good spots to fish and we even found a few of our own that kept us within 15-20 miles of camp. I even set the lodge record for the week with a 30″ walleye on the second day! Anyway the lodge consists of a 9 cottages ranging in size( this according to their website, but I think they have a few more now). Ours was a 4 bedroom, 2 bath unit that like all the rest is well appointed with a full kitchen, plenty of space to spread out including a large deck and a chest freezer for storing your catch to take home, all in the knotty pine Northwoods decor. Its was very comfortable for the 6 of us. Included in our package was a 19 foot deep hull (important for the water body size) boat with gps/fishfinder that had built in routes to help keep us out of the hazard areas and a newer 60hp 4-stroke Yamaha outboard that ran like a deer to get us to our spots. Also included was 90 liters of fuel( we used more) and 18 dozen minnows(we had plenty)per boat of 2 persons. I can’t give enough praise to how well this place is run. the boats were cleaned and refueled each night. In the morning the engines and gps were checked, the bait wells in the boats were replenished and the coolers were iced. As a testament to how well this operation is run several people from the other groups there told me this was there 14th, 16th and 18th years coming to Evergreen. For sure this place is on our list for the future! Thanks Kathie and Brent! For more information start here.

As for the fishing? Top Notch! Walleye was the species we were after and this lake did not disappoint. With our group of mixed fishing experience we were still bringing in close to 40 fish a day and many of the groups were way higher. The lake and resort both have a few well planned walleye conservation limits and size quotas that kept the take down, but we had more than what we needed to eat everyday and pictures will be our trophy proof. The pike were also plentiful and honestly a much better fight for me. And then a few great eating yellow perch rounded out our menu many nights. If you’re heading north to fish keep this resort on your list you would will not be disappointed. And an interesting side note; I would have thought that for this lodge fishing would be their main season, but in talking to the owners they said that “moose season” was there biggest season along with bear hunting. I think Brent said they are booked several years out for hunting. who would have guest. Interested in seeing more pictures from our trip? Head over here.

So that’s it! what more could you ask for, Love you guys!
