Cape Coral Life

A Funny Thing Happened A Few Weeks Ago!

Hi guys!

Welcome to steamy south Florida. A third of the way though our rainiest month of the year and almost no rain, but its hot!

So, a few weeks back Barb and I were heading to a favorite wildlife preserve and the entrance is a mile or so down this old dusty road. We like it because it’s way off the beaten track, hardly ever see other hikers, has a stream running through it and no signage!(We think the sign keeps disappearing because the dusty road is a county easement on someone’s farm land) Check it out here if you’re interested. Anyway, we’re heading down this road and up ahead its blocked by 3 cars, parked in the middle of the road, doors open and a bunch of people standing and staring out into the farm field binoculars in hand. We pull up and Barb jumps out of the car and asks what’s everyone looking at? They’re all watching a bunch of Bobwhite quail running around and they told us they’re a “Birding Gang” We stayed and watch with them for a bit and they invited us to join group. So now we’re part of a Birding Gang! 3 gangs to be exact.(You can check out my Bobwhite and other pictures from that day at the “Florida Wildlife” link below)

The funny thing is we’ve been hiking several times a month for the last 5 or 6 years and we saw birds, but we were just as interested in the fauna and other animals. Now, our hikes are mostly to identified birding sites and even our regular walks are filled with bird sightings that we never noticed before. So many that I’ve set up a page link just for bird sightings that you can check out of our “Cape Coral Life” page here. I’ll still have Florida Wildlife 2026 page to cover all non-birds that you can find there too. Its just I have so many pictures of birds I want to share and its only June!

The pictures above are from shore bird nesting site just north of us. I hope to get back there this week because the Black Skimmers should be hatching soon.

While I’m on the subject of wildlife, I still have some updates to Florida Wildlife page that you can find here. And we’ve also been to Blue Heron Bridge few times since I last posted and you fined those great finds here.

Oh! this kind of fits in with wildlife. As you may or may not know Barb has been working hard on making her gardens wildlife friendly and they have been certified by the Butterfly Association of America. The next step was to help Butterflies increase their populations by providing host plants for specific species and a safe place to get started. So I built her a butterfly nursery and below was our first customer! A Gulf Fritillary.

And in case you haven’t had a chance to see the whole site, you can check that out here. I know that everyone uses a phone to surf the internet, but our site really is better in a larger format. Tim
